Presentation

Date: August 20 2012
         Monday
Place: El Puego, Canelar, Zamboanga City

After morning duty, we went straight to El Puego ( Ate Jean's own establishment) to prepare for our presentation. We prepared our Powerpoint presentation, LCD projector, videoke, foods and drinks on the second floor. All other groupmates arrived and we were all set.

We were pushing each other as to who will report but it ended with Jeric. He started talking about our survey questionnaires but it did not end since someone on the first floor was singing (LOL). Dr. Rosaldo came in and questioned about our proposed questions. He mentioned that most of our questions are focus on the performance of the nurse which is just one component of the research. We still have to touch 4 aspects like services, qualifications, benifits and communication.

Hahahaha, that means retool. We need to revise the questions again and hopefully by next presentation it will be correct.

First Day (?) of Class in UV

Date: August 19 2012
           Sunday

It was actually the second day of class but because we are all late enrollees, we considered it as our first day of Masteral Studies. It was held at the convention center of ZCSMST. The place is not new to me at all, I have been to this center during my high school days for a student event conference and I really can not forget this place because of a certain circumstance that I will leave it as my secret.

When I arrived at the center, I felt a little awkward. I saw my classmates inside the center and most of them were my seniors/superiors before. Some were my mentors during my volunteer days at the ZCMC, some were my teachers in nursing school and most were I should say, older (sorry for the word) and of course, big bosses on their own company.

It was Dr. Gonzales who will be teaching us on the aspects of Management. Dr Gonzales is a former WMSU President and now, president of SWU and a professor of UV for our masterals.

When the class was about to start, I knew then that we are a mixed type of class. Doctorates and Masterals of different disciplines were fused into one class. Well that explains why Mam Monsanto and Mam Nene was seating on the front row. They are my classmates in Management with Dr Gonzales.

Dr Gonzales was talking about Management the whole day. When you have not read the assignments given to you during the first day then you really don't have any idea what he was talking about. Good thing, I have a little background of Management since I was helping my sister with her MBA lessons. So the lessons went on smoothly, Dr Gonzales effectively summarized the whole book (Theories of Management) in just one sitting, PROMISE. I was really in awe that he just explained the theories by memory without even reading to get some cues or hints to start explaining.

Yama Yama Days.

In the afternoon, the class was split. MAN students were segregated to another class with Dr. Rosaldo. There each group presented their survey questions for the assessment of how efficient and effective the hospital management is currently doing. But for our group, we failed to present. (LOL)

Before the presentation, we were actually unprepared. We prepared our presentation in a rushed. We skip our class just to get to town and photocopied our questionnaires.

We were actually waiting for our turn to present on the back side of the building. We were having a conversation with the group and we were waiting for the cue (the Voice of Sir Rosaldo can be heard at our location). But I do not know what happen that next thing I know we were actually chasing our professor. He was waiting for us at the building, he asked his assistant to look for us but he did not find us so the presentation was rescheduled the following day.

Masters of Arts in Nursing Major in Nursing Management

My first day of school with my classmates for the MAN NM program of the University of the Visayas. To tell you the truth, I was never this stressful since the NCLEX board examinations last 2008 when the professor mentioned about the different requirements to complete for the MAN title especially the Comprehensive Examination and the Thesis Writing and Defense. I thought of quitting (even when you ask my colleagues) hahaha on the first day of meeting. Sigh, even it was just a two hour session but then it was gruelsome hearing those requirements to finish. And that's not just about it, he explained about the expected expenses until graduation. We ask, could we even be able afford the total amount of expenses until graduation with just a mere monthly salary, hahahaha.

But anyways so much for that, I know this is just part of the challenges ahead. We will reroute our story to the course itself. I am currently enrolled for the program Master of Arts in Nursing Major in Nursing Management at the University of Visayas. This is an off campus program that is held in different cities like Zamboanga. According to our professor, this university has a Level 4 accreditation for Commission of Higher Education which means it has the capacity to conduct off campus classes and that we will spend less compared to students enrolled in other universities with no or lesser accreditation when the Thesis defense comes. What do I mean by this? It means that the university will not anymore invite personnels from CHED to check, monitor and evaluate during our oral defense meaning lesser honorarium fees.

The MAN NM program of this university is a 36 unit course. It is a 1 year course program and we are expected to be fully loaded every semester for us to finish this course in a year. It is a modular approach program so definitely we are expected to read more and more and more since we only have a few classroom lectures. According to our professor, we are the pioneer batch to attend the said program in Zamboanga City and we are 48 students in the city all in all from the academe and nursing service.

To tell you the truth, I was really hesitant to enroll in this program for several reasons. Number one that comes to my mind is (1) maybe this is a scam but having said that the coordinator of this program in this city is a credible professor and most students enrolled are all well known. (2) could I afford their fees but having said that it is less compared to other universities in the city and nearby provinces (except WMSU of course) and I wanted to finish my graduate studies from a certain university that is outside the Zamboanga Peninsula.  To add that, I have a 30% discount for having a managerial nurse position in my work. (3) can I serve two masters (work and school) at the same time but having said that we meet 3-4 times a semester every Sundays and it is a modular approach.

And so, to date, I am now officially enrolled in this program. I am now a University of the Visayas Master of Arts in Nursing Student. Hope I can make it. Wish me luck.
